Revenge of the Nerds

Progressive Hackers of the word unite!

In the aftermath of the 2016 election, with growing public awareness to the spread of ‘fake news’ and the implicit social media culpability in its rise, a group of liberal coders have decided to address the issue. What they came up with was Debug politics, a project dedicated to allowing bright coding minds to come up with solutions to our broken political system. The group has held a series of “hackathons”, whereby coders compete to come up with one idea to fix our election system.

Hackers are among the groups of Americans who are waking up to the dangers of the coming Trump presidency. They are starting to unite and oppose his anti-progressive views. From Vice News:

The silver lining in the election of Trump was encouraging people to demand things instead of just being nice and expecting it,” said Matt Borg, an amateur software developer at the hackathon who works with the Progressive Coders Network (“progcode” in their shorthand). “The arc of history may bend toward justice, but it doesn’t just come to you; you have to fight for it.

Algorithmic trickery helped Trump take the White House while no one was looking. Now that we are all aware of the overwhelming ability of the internet to spread misinformation, minds like these will be needed to combat this insidious problem.

Blowing the Whistle

The hacking community scored a huge win last week with the release of Chelsea Manning, the whistle-blower responsible for putting Wikileaks on the map. Julian Assange, the sites’ owner, has stated he would be extradited to the U.S. if this was done, putting a question mark on his fate. The new president has made cozy statements about the watchdog website, praising them for their work in exposing Hillary Clinton’s emails. Could some type of deal with Assange be in the works?

The Republican party and Mr Trump’s open courting of this fiercely independent organization is amazing to watch given their close proximity to the military, who are overt hostility towards leaks of any kind. Their contortions on the issue continue to entertain, and almost certainly will come back to haunt them…

anonymousRemaining Anonymous

Covert hacktivist group anonymous came out the other day with a warning to Trump that the next four years would not be kind to him. In what appears to be trolling the new president, they specifically threatened to expose his ties to Russia in a series of tweets:

It is quite possible that these are just idle threats, as the group has made them before. But still, the mind races with possiblilites.
In a new twist, Wikileaks called today for someone to hand over Trump’s tax returns, so that they can release them to the public.

It will be interesting to gauge the Republican reaction. What will be uncovered in the next 4 years?

Good Guys Wear White Hats

The hacking community is overwhelmingly progressive. It is made up of young, urban, ethnically diverse, educated individuals who almost certainly oppose Trumps march back in time. These minds are needed in the fight against tyranny and fascism. They are going to attack intellectual freedom with everything. We have to try and be one step ahead of them. I don’t know about you, but I want the smart guys on our side…
